Devastating Update on UPS Accident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The tally of fatalities due to the UPS cargo plane which burst into flames and plummeted has risen to 13, as confirmed by recent reports.

Mayor's Remarks

Traveling to the Union’s vigil, I learned of a thirteenth victim that died as a result of the plane accident,” expressed the local official in a online message. “My heart is with the loved ones, friends and co-workers of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will endure this together.”

Deceased Named

A release from the carrier identified the flight crew operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts reach out to every staff member who has been impacted and everyone in our Louisville area – supporting you and ensuring you obtain the attention and assistance you need is our focus,” the company’s statement stated.

Probe Findings

Government officials announced that the freight aircraft’s port side wing ignited and an engine fell off just after takeoff from the aviation hub, leading to the jet to plummet and explode into a blaze.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is probing the plane’s maintenance history, which was in Texas for repairs weeks before the crash.

Flight tracking records showed the aircraft was on the ground in the Texas city from 3 September to mid-October.

“We are cognizant that this plane was present in that city,” remarked an NTSB member on later, without a exact date range. “We will look at all elements of repairs that was performed, including the repair period, straight to the time of the flight.”

Retrieval of Critical Items

The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were recovered, and the motor was discovered on the tarmac.

The recorders – known as flight recorders – were built to withstand accident forces and extreme temperatures from infernos, and they looked to be in one piece when discovered within the crash debris. Investigators plan on reviewing recordings from the black boxes.

The plane’s final data recordings displayed an elevation of that level and a rate of 210 mph prior to the crash.

Service Background

Per aviation authority records from last month, a crack on a structural piece in the tank area demanded maintenance.

Singapore-based ST Engineering, which stated it offers aircraft servicing for the carrier’s jet and operates a repair facility in San Antonio, declined to speak, but stated it would work closely when officials contacted it.

Operations Restart

In the meantime, the hub operations resumed that evening with its express also known as evening operation, representative Jim Mayer said. All three tarmacs at the airport were also back in operation.

The sorting center in the city is the firm’s most significant. The center engages in excess of twenty thousand people in the area, handles numerous aircraft daily and sorts more than 400,000 packages an hour.

Local Response

A candlelight vigil was organized on the late afternoon of 6 November by the regional worker’s group, which represents employees at the Louisville airport, the firm’s largest air cargo hub.

Teamsters Local 89, which represents employees, commenced the gathering with a moment of silence at that time, the estimated time of the crash previously.

“This event was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the leader told the assembly of attendees. “No one had a opportunity to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
