New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
